How to Capture a Pre-Authorized Credit Card Hold in Stripe (2024)

In case you ever wanted to place a HOLD on a customer’s card, for whatever reason, such as a deposit, or damage deposit, or what ever. Here’s how you can do that in the STRIPE dashboard.

+ Create Payment

First rap on this button, it should be purple. See screenshot below.

Step 1 to capture a pre-authorized credit card HOLD in Stripe is to +Create Payment (purple button).

“Capture Funds Later”

Once you’ve entered the +Create Payment screen, you’ll want to enter the amount of money you’d like to capture, as. well as the customer whose card you want to capture it from, before finally selecting the “Capture Funds Later” checkbox, after which you can “Submit Payment”.

In Step 2 of How to Place a Hold on a Credit Card in Stripe, you enter the amount, select the customer, and choose “Capture Funds Later”, before “Submit Payment”.

Submit Payment

And now you’re done! You have 7 days before the hold expires and the money is returned back to the customer if you don’t capture the payment before the 7 days expires!
